Hiring someone without head coaching experience has not been working; that’s been pretty evident for the last year and a half. Today’s list only includes names who have been collegiate head coaches, though each of them certainly would bring a different perspective to Louisville. This hire would be the most unconventional of the list, but perhaps it could actually work?

Davenport has spent nearly his entire life in the city of Louisville. He attended the school and was a graduate assistant under Denny Crum. After a brief coaching stint at VCU, he returned to coach high school ball in Louisville before a nine-year stint under both Crum and Rick Pitino on the Cardinals’ staff. Since 2005 he’s been the head coach at Bellarmine, a program which joined the D1 level just a few seasons ago, having won the D2 national title back in 2011.

Bringing someone with such history with the city and the program would be a great move for stability and Davenport has been a great leader throughout his coaching career. Obviously, his only collegiate head coaching experience has come at Bellarmine, and the jump from the Knights in the A-Sun to the ACC would be intense for Davenport. There’s also the issue that he’s in his mid-60’s and likely would not be a longterm answer for the program, but perhaps he could bring legitimate stability for the coming years.
