San Diego State Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Aztecs
By Joey Loose
What San Diego State Basketball accomplished last season certainly puts this program a notch higher than some of the other potent mid-majors in the nation. A deep talented roster played elite defense, competed at the highest level and advanced all the way to the national championship game before falling to UConn back in April. Head coach Brian Dutcher could not have drawn the season up any better, aside from a final triumph over the Huskies of course.
Although things will be a bit different this upcoming season, the attitude remains the same in San Diego. These Aztecs have the talent not just to be one of the best mid-major programs in the country but to be one of the best programs period. How they follow up this long run to the title game will be interesting to watch, especially as the Mountain West gets slightly tougher around them.
Matt Bradley was the only player who averaged double-digit points per game last season and the Aztecs will certainly miss him this year. San Diego State leaned heavily on their depth and their strong defense and the absences of Nathan Mensah, Keshad Johnson, and others will surely be felt as well. As previously mentioned, things will look different on the court, but will the expectations be the same for these Aztecs?
Dutcher added a few intriguing pieces into the mix and there are some young faces who could carve out a much more significant role with the team this year. Additionally, a few major parts of last year’s title run return, including the man who hit the legendary buzzer beater over Florida Atlantic in the Final Four. We’ll be looking at who’s on this San Diego State squad, what their schedule looks like for this season, and what exactly we can expect from an Aztecs program that’s been buzzing for months since that Final Four run.
