Things were looked dire and uncertain just five seasons ago in Storrs. Kevin Ollie had run his course as head coach of UConn Basketball and had the program trending in a terrible direction. The program turned towards Rhode Island head coach Dan Hurley, whose brother Bobby was more of a known commodity for his career at Duke and coaching at Arizona State, but certainly Dan rewarded the Huskies’ faith.

Last season, UConn looked like the best program in the country at times, especially early in the year. They caught fire again in the postseason and as a result claimed their fifth national championship in program history. A massive turnaround was authored by Hurley, who inherited a program stuck in the AAC that couldn’t make the Big Dance and turned them into champions again.

Coming off a national title, expectations are high at UConn again this season and why shouldn’t they be? The Huskies will surely miss Adama Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins, perhaps their two best players from last year’s title run, while also shedding a few more names from the rotation. However, a few young players who really started to emerge last year are back and Hurley has put new intriguing pieces around them as well.

The preseason praise for these Huskies isn’t just a result of them cutting down the nets this past April: this version of UConn hoops could be just as successful. We’ll dive into what remains on this roster, while also touching on the new faces, the schedule ahead, and some reasonable expectations for basketball at UConn. Hurley worked his magic and has this program shining in a very strong Big East, but what lies ahead in his sixth season at the helm?
