Big East Basketball: Ranking of top 5 big men for 2023-24 season
By John Makuch
1. Donovan Clingan, UConn
Only one of these players can say that they are National Champions, and that would be Donovan Clingan from UConn. The 7’2, 280-pound monster made a massive impact on a Husky team that would go out and win the whole tournament.
He did not get the huge opportunity to shine like he will this year due to him being only a freshman and also backing up arguably the best big man in the nation last year in Adama Sanogo. But now, Clingan has a year under his belt and will be given the lead role down low for the reigning National Champions.
He averaged 6.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game even after having to work his way to more minutes as the season went along, so if those numbers translate to the new amount of minutes he is going to be playing, this conference may just be in trouble. Coach Dan Hurley will look to use him to just dominate with his size, especially on the defensive end of the floor where his rim protection will be near impossible to get through.
Now unfortunately he may miss some time with a foot injury, but once he makes his return and gets healthy there is no sign of him being slowed down, including on the offensive end of the floor where he became a great pick-and-roll player. He has that huge 7’2 size but also has great footwork, touch, and agility for someone of that stature, and it is going to be exciting to see what another offseason has brought him in terms of those skills.
All of these big men are phenomenal and absolute forces, this conference should be beyond excited that these players are going to play each other at least twice this season, we will have to wait and see who steps up, and takes the crown when it is all said and done.
