Big Ten Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 1: Tom Izzo, Michigan State Spartans
Tom Izzo hasn’t just been one of the best college basketball coaches in the BIG Ten, but one of the best basketball coaches in the last 20 years. Izzo seemed like he has been at Michigan State forever with how long he has coached there, and it’s for good reason. Izzo has been with the Spartans since 1995, and has won a lot in his time there.
Izzo has a record of 687-280 and has has so many accomplishments. He has had 1 championship, 1 runner up, 6 final fours, 2 elite eights, 5 sweet sixteens, and too many tournament appearances to count. Izzo is the king of the BIG Ten and it’s not even close. Matt Painter is a great coach and has had some great runs, but Izzo just has so many accomplishments it’s hard to compare them.
While Izzo is getting up there in age he is still one of the best basketball coaches around and will always be one of the best active coaches as long as he is still active in college basketball.
In a conference of underperformers in the postseason, Izzo makes up for all of them in how good of a winner and head coach he truly is.
Tom Izzo will likely top the BIG Ten till he retires, and it is not much of a debate.
