Big Ten Basketball: Ranking all 14 head coaches heading into 2023-24 season
By Caleb Hall
No. 9: Mike Woodson, Indiana Hoosiers
Mike Woodson has had a lot of regular season success with Indiana, but it hasn’t necessarily resulted in a lot of postseason victories. Woodson was a player under the Bobby Knight led Hoosiers back in the day, as he played for Indiana from 1976-80. Woodson was an NBA assistant from 1996 to 2021, where he eventually took the Indiana head coaching job. Woodson was also the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks at a point in time. He never truly excelled or failed in the NBA as a head coach, but simply middled in his time as a head coach at the professional level.
Woodson at Indiana has compiled a 44-26 overall record, while finishing with 21 and 23 wins in his first 2 seasons there. Woodson has had decent seeded teams in the 2 tournaments he has been in, but has failed to make it past the first weekend in either year. Woodson does seem to have the Hoosiers moving in the right direction though.
Indiana seems to be in the national spotlight more, and Woodson has them trending in the right direction. Woodson could move higher and higher on this list, but for now, because of post season disappointments, he remains here.
