Seton Hall Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Pirates
By John Makuch
2023-24 season outlook
One thing to note about Seton Hall’s outlook is the strength of the Big East Conference this season. While the conference is usually strong, they have the reigning National Champions in UConn, several consistent programs that got better, and a St. Johns team that made a huge splash in hiring Rick Pitino. The Pirates will have to compete with some tough teams in order to not get left behind as this conference moves forward.
This will be difficult to do with a ton of roster turnover, youth that needs to grow, and a head coach in Holloway who is strong but is still building this program. This makes those first four games so important for them to gel, and work in these transfers and young players. They also have their hopes resting on the shoulders of their veterans in Kadary Richmond and Al-Amir Dawes, but their frontcourt play will really tell the story in a conference with a ton of great big men.
What they do have is a ton of size and raw talent that Holloway can help develop into great defensive players, which he was able to do during his time at Saint Peters. This program is looking to get back to the consistent tournament appearances they saw in the Kevin Willard era, but time is needed for that to make its return.
This team is projected to finish near the bottom of the conference, and that is likely where they will end up, but they can still show promise with their youth, and how Coach Holloway and this team react through potential hardships. There are plenty of question marks on this team, so expect those to come up and be solved during the nonconference slate.
This second year though is where Pirate fans will get a true view of how great Coach Holloway can be, and based on his prior success, there will be plenty of that to show for once this season is finished.
