4. Connecticut (2-0)

Nobody will forget that this Huskies team cut down the nets last April, claiming their fifth national championship in program history. A few of the big names from Dan Hurley’s title-winning squad are gone, but they aren’t ranked this high just because of last season. Big things are expected of sophomores Alex Karaban and Donovan Clingan while there are some very potent veteran pieces in the backcourt.

There wasn’t much sweat on opening night, as Connecticut coasted to a 95-52 win over Northern Arizona. Karaban opened the season with a 22-point, 7-rebound performance while point guard Tristen Newton added 14. There really wasn’t drama on Saturday either, with the Huskies handling Stonehill to the tune of a 107-67 victory. Newton led the way with 22 points and 7 rebounds while freshman Stephon Castle had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists.

With major breakout candidates and significant postseason experience all over this roster, it’s no wonder why big things are expected of these Huskies this season. They are certainly in a position to potentially repeat as champions, but can only take things one day at a time. A relatively easy start to the season continues with Mississippi Valley State next week though a more intriguing matchup against Indiana awaits.
