NCAA Basketball: Isaiah Stevens, Bub Carrington Players of the 1st week
By Bryan Mauro
Power conference Player of the Week – Carlton Carrington
The true freshman guard is likely going to win numerous weekly awards this year in both the ACC and nationally. The guard arrived at Pittsburgh with high expectations and throughout the summer played like one of the best players for the Panthers and showed why he was their prized recruit. Carrington is a talented kid but we have all seen that one the real competition starts the freshmen get eased into competition a little bit and with the returning pieces that Pittsburgh has that was a luxury they were going to have. Carrington had other ideas though.
In his first collegiate game that counted the star freshman recorded a triple double. He had 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists against North Carolina A&T. Then as a follow up to the triple double, against Binghamton he had 18 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists. The second game was not as great as the first game but usually after a triple double everything evens out. I am far more partial to a triple double than others because they are very rare in college basketball and are not going to be something that we see much of this season for the rest of the year. Triple double aside the freshman put the rest of the ACC on watch with his performance.
In two games over the last week Carrington show 13 for 23 from the field. Was 7-13 from deep and 3 for 5 from the free throw line. He is not going to shoot 60% from deep all year but he very easily could shoot over 50% from the floor and has a chance to shoot over 40% from deep on the year. The question is can he maintain the 8 rebounds and 7 assist average all year. Those will likely fall but who knows how much. Reasonably the guard should be able to average 6 rebounds and 3-4 assists per game. If he does that, he will be in the running ACC freshman of the year and win a lot of other National awards and be one of the finalists for the National Freshman of the year. Pitt has a good one in Carrington.
These rankings are always going to be a hot topic because of how subjective they are. Every writer is going to value something different. These are the two I felt were most deserving after the weeks they had. This is going to be running through the entire season so check back next week to see if your favorite player was the Player of the Week.
