Mid-major Player of the Weel – Marcus Foster (Furman)

The Furman Paladins are a team that many know now because of their awesome win in the NCAA tournament. What the casual fan may not know is that the Paladins are one of the most consistent teams in the Southern Conference and are a threat to make the tournament again this season. Furman does not look as good this season as they were last season but losing the pieces they lost due to graduation it is understandable that the program is due for a little rebuild. Even with the little rebuild head coach Bob Richey still has a team that is one of the favorites in the Southern Conference.

Marcus Foster enters his last season as a Paladin and it is starting out as the best of his career. Foster headed into this season as a two-year starter and gained the reputation of a great shooter but was a guy who never had to carry the load on offense due to others that played for Furman. This year that appears to change and Foster is going to be one of the main options for the Paladins. If the guard continues to dominate like he did in Myrtle Beach over the last week then Furman is going to be just fine. Foster had a week that many guys, including household names, will be lucky to replicate all season.

In three games last week the guard scored 78 points, hauled in 17 rebounds, and had six assists. The 78 points is what really stands out. In a loss to Liberty the guard scored 30 points on 9-15 shooting which included going 3-6 from deep. The guard also was 9-11 from the free throw line. In tournament play the guard was able to take the floor the very next day and in a win over Coastal Carolina he scored 30 points again on 12-23 shooting. He had a rough day shooting from deep at only 2-10. It was still a 30 point game. In the final game of the weekend on Sunday, a loss to Wyoming the guard was starting to tire and only scored 18 points on 6-12 shooting, but again was only 1-5 from deep.

There have been a lot of guys who have scored back to back 30 point games, but it would take extensive research and it would be hard to find a player who has scored 30 points on back to back days. Foster would have gladly traded those games for a winning week, instead he takes home the Busting Brackets Mid Major player of the week after a great Myrtle Beach Invitational week.
