The 2023 Charleston Classic once again remains a premier NCAA Basketball as the true start of “Feast Week”. We had a few upsets and some close finishes, with the Houston Cougars ultimately winning the title.

There’s something to take away from each team after the past four days and three games. Here’s my thoughts for each program.

8th place – Towson Tigers (2-4)

Takeaway: Need quality frontcourt to have any chance in the CAA

Towson was expected to finish last in this group and they did, though getting blown out by North Texas was surely a disappointing result. In their best game of the group, a 10-point loss to Wake Forest forwards Tyler Tejada (16 pts) and Messiah Jones (12 and 9) had good games. The guards struggled in every game but that was expected against better competition. Without star guard Nick Timberlake on the roster, the Tigers will need to go through the frontcourt to compete in league play this time around.

7th place – North Texas Mean Green (3-2)

Takeaway: Mean Green can fight for a top spot in the AAC

The Mean Green could’ve easily won the first two games, falling by a combined five points to St. John’s and LSU. They beat Towson by 26 points, the team’s best performance yet. Forward Aaron Scott, who has become the team’s best player, had 19 points in the 7th-place game.

Outside of Memphis, the AAC is very much up for grabs, since FAU is coming off a bad home loss to Bryant. Despite losing former Conference Player of the Year guard Tyler Perry and HC Grant McCasland, North Texas remains a quality defensive unit with some talent offensive pieces. They might not be a team capable of getting an at-large bid but for a few days on March, this team will be a tough out.
