3. Colorado State Rams

Colorado State was a big disappointment last season, finishing in the bottom tier of the Mountain West. But as soon as star guard Isaiah Stevens elected to return for another season, they had a shot at making a turnaround. Early wins over Louisiana Tech and Wright State were okay but it was the Hall of Fame Classic where the team had a chance to make national noise.

And that the Rams did. They started off with Boston College, a solid but beatable program in the ACC. Colorado State’s offense proved to be too much, winning 86-74. All five starters were in double figures, led by 18 pts and 8 asts from Stevens. In the next game, he put on an even bigger show, going for 20 pts, 7 asts, and 6 rebs in the upset win over top-10 Creighton, 69-48.

The level of dominance of the Rams’ win was a shock but this weekend showed that they’re not only a legit contender in the Mountain West but also capable of getting an at-large bid. They’re now 6-0 on the season with a Quad 1 and 2 victory to build off of.

Colorado State now takes on the Pac-12 in the next week, with Colorado at home up next. Washington at a neutral site game follows, both of whom are beatable for the Rams. Going 1-1 would be ideal for their resume.
