Big East Basketball: Villanova’s breakout, Creighton’s upset among latest storylines
By John Makuch
3. Trouble in Omaha
The Creighton Blue Jays have hit a rough patch after being upset by Mid-Major Colorado State. At the time they’re ranked No. 8 in the nation and all the expectations are on these tough guys from Omaha.
They got upset by the Rams which is definitely a cause for concern because this was not a close game by any stretch of the imagination. This was a 69-48 thrashing of Creighton by Colorado State, and this was in Kansas City, Missouri, which is basically a home game for this program.
While this is one game in a very long season, and this does not ruin the season by any stretch of the imagination, it makes the next few games must-win games for this team. They have two solid opponents coming up in Oklahoma State and Nebraska, and it is up to Creighton to silence the critics after a tough loss.
This team still had plenty of talent to get back to being a top-ten team, and great teams have these slip-ups from time to time. This just cannot become a habit, especially once Big East play comes around.
Creighton should rebound just fine after a loss like this, but If they do not, then the alarm bells will have to sound even louder. Struggles like these are when you rely on your stars such as Ryan Kalkbrenner, so expect him to have some big games in the rest of this nonconference stretch.
