NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Pros and cons of 5-star Dylan Harper’s top 5 teams
Indiana Hoosiers
Pros
Unlike Duke and Auburn, Indiana doesn’t have any crowded backcourt issues to worry about after this season. Starting point guard Xavier Johnson is in his final year of eligibility, with Gabe Cupps the only other true ball-handler. So while Trey Galloway has emerged as a capable passer/distributor for the Hoosiers this season, Harper would run the offense for this option a year from now.
If center Kel’el Ware opts to go pro after this year, then Indiana will have to retool its roster again. Five-star commit Liam McNeeley will be another scoring option for Harper to play with and Mike Woodson is a former NBA head coach and can help the guard’s development to the next level. Plus, Indiana is one of the top programs in NCAA Basketball, and having a big year will raise his profile.
Cons
If Ware does leave, will the Hoosiers have enough talent for Harper to win with? We’ve seen a roster that has talent but isn’t constructed well-enough to succeed compared to preseason expectations. And is Mackenzie Mgbako comes back for another season, how will he fit into a offense that’s more perimeter-oriented?
Pairing Harper and Galloway would be a good backcourt but with neither being true “pass first” playmakers, it could affect how potent the offense is overall. And just as important, the Hoosiers may be focusing just as much on 5-star big man Derik Queen in case they need to replace Ware inside.
