Not long after the end of the regular season for the Indiana basketball program, the Hoosiers found its next head coach in former West Virginia Mountaineers bench boss Darian DeVries.

The news of Indiana finding its next head coaching hire comes just one year after DeVries took the job as West Virginia's head basketball coach last offseason. DeVries nearly led the Mountaineers to an NCAA Tournament appearance in his first season in Morgantown.

Before taking the head coaching job at West Virginia, DeVries led the Drake Bulldogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances and three conference championships over six seasons with the program. DeVries replaces former Indiana head coach Mike Woodson, who stepped down at the end of the 2024-25 regular season for the Hoosiers.

The fact that Indiana and West Virginia didn't make the Big Dance this postseason means that DeVries can get to work immediately building out the new roster for the Hoosiers early this offseason.

Jonathan Powell, F

The day after West Virginia missed the NCAA Tournament on the bubble for this postseason, freshman wing Jonathan Powell announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal, On3's Joe Tipton reported.

Powell earned a spot in the starting five for the Mountaineers a couple of months into his true freshman campaign in Morgantown. After cracking the starting five, Powell averaged nearly nine points per game, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal.

He emerged as a key source of secondary scoring and rebounding for the Mountaineers on the wing. In the 15 games Powell scored in double figures during the 2024-25 regular season, West Virginia was 12-3.

With Powell entering the transfer portal just before the news of DeVries taking the job at Indiana this offseason, it would theoretically make sense for the freshman Ohio native to consider taking his talents to join the Hoosiers for the 2025-26 season. Powell could also stay close to home in the Midwest by joining the Hoosiers in the Big Ten via the portal this offseason.

Amani Hansberry, F

West Virginia boasted one of the toughest defenses in the Big 12 in the season that was for the 2024-25 campaign. Led by stout defenders and reliable rebounders like guard Sencire Harris and forward Amani Hansberry, West Virginia ranked second in the Big 12 in defensive rating in the 2024-25 season.

Hansberry did a little bit of everything it seemed for the Mountaineers. He could space the floor at times, shooting over 30 percent from beyond the arc in Big 12 play. Hansberry also contributed to West Virginia's paint presence in a big way, averaging seven rebounds per game this past season.

The Baltimore, MD, native joined DeVries and the Mountaineers via the transfer portal last offseason after spending one season with the Illinois Fighting Illini in the Big Ten.

Hansberry was West Virginia's leading frontcourt scorer this past regular season at a clip of a career-best 9.8 points per game.

Tucker DeVries, G

Star senior shooting guard Tucker DeVries suffered an unfortunate season-ending injury after playing just eight games for the Mountaineers in the 2024-25 campaign. DeVries had the Mountaineers looking like a real contender in the Big 12 early this past regular season.

Jeff Goodman reported earlier this week that Tucker is expected to follow Darian to Indiana this upcoming offseason. DeVries can use the final year of his collegiate eligibility to play the 2025-26 season for the Hoosiers in the Big Ten.

DeVries, the two-time MVC Player of the Year for Drake, is one of the most proven and star-powered scorers in college hoops.
