The Texas basketball program has found its head coaching hire to replace Rodney Terry early this offseason. Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesmen was the first to report on March 23 that Xavier Musketeers head coach Sean Miller "will be hired" to replace Terry as Texas's next head coach.
This news comes less than one week after Miller and Xavier defeated the Longhorns in the first four of the NCAA Tournament this postseason. Miller also faced Terry and the Longhorns in the Sweet 16 during the 2023 NCAA Tournament, with Texas advancing to the Elite Eight behind a multi-possession win a couple of postseasons ago.
Texas is the third different school and fourth stop for Miller during his college hoops coaching career. He's also coached with the Arizona Wildcats for over a decade (2009-2021) and Xavier twice, including for the past three seasons.
Miller is a three-time Pac-10/12 Coach of the Year and won the A-10 Coach of the Year honors in 2008. He's won a dozen conference titles (between regular season and conference tournament championships at Xavier and Arizona since the early 2000s) and made the NCAA Tournament over a dozen times.
With the NCAA Transfer Portal window for the spring opening on Monday (March 24), the timing of this hire works out well for the Longhorns and Miller to build out the roster early this offseason for Texas ahead of the 2025-26 season.
Ryan Conwell, G
The first target I think that Miller should try to bring with him to the Longhorns from the Xavier roster this past season with the Musketeers is junior standout guard Ryan Conwell. The 6-foot-4 and 195-pound two-time transfer Conwell has one year of eligibility remaining.
The 2024-25 All-Big East Third-Team guard for the Musketeers, Conwell was one of the most experienced and versatile proven players for Xavier on both ends of the floor. Conwell scored in double figures in the season's final 10 games for Xavier, and he led the team in three-point shooting (41.3 three-point field goal percentage).
Conwell and senior forward Zach Freemantle led Xavier's offense this past season for Miller and Co., with both upperclassmen scoring at a clip north of 16 points per game in the 2024-25 campaign.
Dailyn Swain, F
Sophomore wing/forward Dailyn Swain might be the most intriguing and potent talent that the Longhorns could get, with Miller coming from Xavier early this offseason. Swain grew his role at Xavier this past season, starting a career-high 33 games and scoring at a career-high clip of 11.0 points per game.
Swain was really impressive in Xavier's Round of 64 exit loss to the Illinois Fighting Illini, scoring a career-high 27 points and eight rebounds against a good defense under Brad Underwood.
At 6-foot-7 and 200 pounds, Swain has the type of length and pure athletic tools to be a next-level wing in the NBA if he can continue to improve his outside shot and consistency on both ends.
Nyk Lewis, PG*
Miller and the Musketeers landed one of the top-ranked point guard recruits in the nation in the 2025 class by signing Washington DC Gonzaga College high-four-star floor general Nyk Lewis.
The No. 7 point guard recruit in the nation in the 2025 class in the 247Sports Composite will be one of the top targets for Miller to bring to the Longhorns this offseason.
Lewis is the only player on this list with an asterisk next to his name because he hasn't played any games in college. But he projects as a big-time player at the collegiate level as an athletic two-way guard who can effectively facilitate and offense and attack the basket in transition and the settled half-court offensive set.
