Bob Richey

All avenues are open for the next head coach at Florida State and there’s a few reasons why Richey could be the fit. A relatively successful coach in his own right, Richey is a mid-major coach whose name has been out there for several years, but he remains entrenched at Furman. Perhaps he’s been waiting for an opportunity just like this own to come along?

A native of New Orleans, Richey’s coaching journey began with stints at Charleston Southern and Furman, spending just over a decade as an assistant coach before being promoted to the top job by Furman in 2017. Since then, he’s turned the Paladins into one of the SoCon’s top programs, finishing Top 3 in the league in all but one season while winning nearly 70% of his games. Richey even led Furman to a memorable upset over Virginia in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

The only head coaching experience for Richey is these last eight years at Furman and you have to wonder how he’d handle the jump to Florida State. He’s proven himself a capable winner in the SoCon but he’s not the only head coach on this list who’d be making one heck of a jump into the ACC. After what his Paladins did to Virginia nearly two years ago, Richey is also running out of things he needs to prove before getting another opportunity.
