Since leaving Texas A&M to take the Maryland Basketball job, head coach Buzz Williams has done a solid job in building up the roster. In the backcourt, he landed 5-star guard prospect Darius Adams, along with transfers Myles Rice (Indiana), David Coit (Kansas), and Isaiah Watts (Washington State).
The frontcourt has some good depth, including former Aggies, George Turkson Jr., Pharrel Payne, and Solomon Washington, following Williams over from the SEC school, along with Virginia forward transfer, Elijah Saunders. Yet the one position of need that remains is a true wing at the three-spot, as Turkson is a redshirt freshman transfer who’s unproven in college basketball.
The Terrapins hoped to land another top-tier recruit: Sebastian Wilkins, a top-40 prospect in the 2026 class who reportedly is reclassing to play next season. The combo forward was a target for Coach Williams when he was at Texas A&M and remained that way, now at Maryland. The team was in a battle with Duke for his services, but in the end, Wilkins opted to play for the Blue Devils for next season.
However, the Terps had another option on the wings available in Rakease Passmore, a former four-star and top-100 prospect in the 2024 recruiting class. The 6’6 wing played just 23 games and 116 total minutes this past season, scoring 17 points on 6/21 FG shooting. It’s not the most impressive number, but for a long-term prospect with three years of eligibility, Passmore is an excellent gamble for the Terrapins on the wings.
Plus, Passmore is more of a true wing, while Wilkins is more of a power forward, a position Maryland already had plenty of depth at. This is more of a true fit for Maryland, so missing out on Wilkins could be a blessing in disguise for the program going forward.
