Alabama basketball did not have to wait long for its biggest recruiting weekend of September to produce a major result.
Chase Lumpkin, a top-30 guard in the 2027 class, committed to the Crimson Tide after visiting Tuscaloosa for Alabama’s football season opener. The 6-foot-5 prospect selected Alabama from a long list of suitors that included Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan, Tennessee, UConn, USC and Villanova.
Lumpkin is ranked No. 25 overall in the 2027 class by 247Sports. More importantly for Alabama, his game appears to align almost perfectly with the style Nate Oats has built around.
“Alabama feels like home,” Lumpkin said through Yea Alabama, the school’s NIL collective. “I believe in Coach Oats, Coach Murphy, the coaching staff, the players, and what they’re building.”
The commitment gives Alabama its first building block in the 2027 class.
Lumpkin Brings More Than Scoring
Lumpkin averaged 17 points, nearly six rebounds, five assists and two steals per game during the most recent EYBL season, according to a 247Sports evaluation shared by Tide 100.9. He also posted a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.
Those numbers make it easy to understand why Alabama pursued him so aggressively.
Lumpkin can play with or without the ball, create offense in transition and use his size against smaller guards. His 6-foot-8 wingspan also gives him the physical tools to become a disruptive defender.
He is not a finished product. Lumpkin shot 32 percent from beyond the arc during EYBL play and still has room to improve his efficiency around the basket. Those areas, however, also reveal how much long-term upside Alabama sees.
This is not a prospect who must dominate the ball to make an impact. Lumpkin can rebound, initiate offense, defend multiple perimeter positions and contribute in transition. That versatility should give Oats several ways to use him.
Alabama Found Its 2027 Foundation
Recruiting victories over Kentucky, Arkansas, Michigan, USC and Louisville carry weight. Alabama did not merely add a highly ranked player. It landed a prospect wanted by several programs that expect to compete deep into March.
Lumpkin’s official visit occurred during a major football weekend, but Alabama basketball clearly made the strongest impression.
The Crimson Tide can now recruit the rest of the 2027 class with a top-25 guard already in place. Other prospects know who could be handling the ball, creating shots and setting the pace when they arrive in Tuscaloosa.
That is a valuable head start for Oats.
Lumpkin closed his announcement with a short message that should excite Alabama fans.
“New chapter. Same mindset. Roll Tide.”
The first piece of Alabama’s 2027 class is in place, and it could become one of its most important.
