When looking at the top players in the college basketball transfer portal, a good case can be made that Milan Momcilovic is the best overall player. The 6’8 forward started 101 games in three years at Iowa State, coming off a career-high campaign of 16.9 ppg, shooting 51% from the field and a whopping 49% from three-point range on 7.5 attempts a game.

Viewed as the best pure shooter in college, Momcilovic entered both the NBA Draft and transfer portal, leaving all of his options open. Right now, he’s projected to get drafted, but it’s far from clear that the junior will be taken within the first 30 picks. If that’s the case, his return would create one of the more anticipated offseason recruitments in recent memory.

Which teams are in the mix to land him? According to Momcilovic himself, there are three teams in the running. Here’s a closer look at how he’d fit with them.

Kentucky Wildcats

The best offenses for Coach Mark Pope have involved great spacing, something Momcilovic will give them. The biggest appeal would be that he’d be the focal point of the offense at Kentucky, allowing him to showcase even more of his skills outside of just shooting. Plus, his presence would make them a surefire top-25 team and potentially good enough to make some noise next March.

Louisville Cardinals

Few teams have been as good as Louisville in the transfer portal this offseason, landing a ton of talent. Even if Momcilovic were to join them, the two key pieces of the roster will still be point guard Jackson Shelstad and big man Flory Bidunga. However, that’s the big selling point, allowing the former Cyclone to be on a top-5 caliber roster and still have a sizeable role to impress scouts. The Cardinals look to be better than Kentucky, and if the money is similar, they would make sense.

St. John’s Red Storm

After losing out on Massamba Diop to Gonzaga, the Red Storm is still looking for more frontcourt help. Yes, Momcilovic is a power forward and not a center, so he wouldn’t be the Diop replacement. That would mean Syracuse transfer pickup Donnie Freeman would have to play more at the five-spot, which would be great offensively but cause some defensive questions. For a St. John’s roster that still needs some scoring, he’d be a great pickup to be a top-10 caliber unit.
