Andrej Stojakovic just changed the entire national title picture. Illinois was already loaded. Now Brad Underwood might have the most terrifying roster in college basketball.
The Big Ten’s biggest fear just became reality
The rest of the Big Ten had one job this offseason: hope Andrej Stojakovic stayed in the NBA Draft. That hope officially died Wednesday night.
Stojakovic is returning to Illinois after testing the NBA waters, and the timing could not be bigger for a program coming off a Final Four run. Illinois was already trending toward preseason top-10 territory. With Stojakovic back, the conversation changes immediately. This is now a legitimate national championship roster.
And honestly, there may not be a more complete starting five in the country.
Illinois suddenly looks built to win everything
Stojakovic returning gives Illinois something most elite teams spend years chasing: proven star power mixed with terrifying depth. He averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds last season while becoming one of the most important pieces in Illinois’ tournament run. His efficiency improved. His defense improved. His feel for winning basketball improved. And now he comes back with NBA Combine experience and even more confidence.
That should scare everyone.
The biggest reason Illinois suddenly feels different is because Stojakovic is no longer being asked to carry chaos. He is stepping into structure. David Mirkovic looks like a future superstar. Stefan Vaaks gives Illinois another massive playmaking guard Brad Underwood loves to build around. Quentin Coleman and Lucas Morillo add elite-level freshman talent. The Ivisic brothers give Illinois ridiculous frontcourt size few teams can match.
There are no obvious weaknesses here.
Illinois can score from everywhere. Illinois can switch defensively. Illinois has shooting. Illinois has length. Illinois has experience. Illinois has NBA talent all over the floor. Most importantly, Illinois now has continuity in an era where continuity barely exists anymore.
Programs across the country are rebuilding entire rosters every offseason. Illinois is bringing back the core of a Final Four team and adding more firepower on top of it. That is how national champions are built.
This decision could change Andrej Stojakovic’s future forever
Andrej Stojakovic may not have been projected as a first-round pick this year, but returning to Champaign could end up being the smartest move of his career. Another deep tournament run with a bigger offensive role could launch him into an entirely different draft conversation in 2027.
For Illinois, though, this is bigger than draft stock.
This is about banners.
The rest of college basketball officially has a problem
The scary part for the rest of college basketball is that Illinois still feels hungry. Stojakovic said it himself in his return announcement. The job is not finished. That mentality becomes dangerous when paired with this much talent.
Indiana fans already know the problem. Illinois crushed the Hoosiers by 20 points last season without Stojakovic even playing. Now he is back, the roster is deeper, and the expectations are even higher.
Good luck dealing with that in February. and March.
Illinois basketball is no longer just a fun Final Four story. Illinois is officially entering the season with the pressure, talent and expectations of a true national title contender.
And after Wednesday night, nobody in college basketball can pretend otherwise.
