Baylor Basketball: 2024-25 season preview for the Bears
By Joey Loose
Season Outlook
Our focus today has been on the current team and the future, though it’s important to understand what Baylor has done in recent years. The team that cut down the nets in 2021 is all gone, yet this staff continues to bring in talented players that elevate the program. Impressive starting rotations win numerous Big 12 games and impose themselves onto the national stage.
This year’s team could do more of the same and even more, even after the offseason changes. First and foremost, Edgecombe has a chance to do something really special this season, especially if he can follow in the footsteps of Ja’Kobe Walter and other recent freshman stars. He’ll be given every opportunity to shine, and certainly isn’t the only freshman recruit who could make an impact this season.
What’s also set this season up for success is how Baylor utilized the Transfer Portal. We could talk a long time about the impact Roach makes on and off the court, bringing not just that talent but the veteran experience of a deep postseason run and playing with stars of the game. Then there’s Omier and the impact he could have in the middle of the action for the Bears, likely en route to a fifth straight season averaging a double-double.
The Bears are solid across the board, with a filthy-talented backcourt and a few sneaky good frontcourt weapons. This isn’t a very tall lineup, with Omier just 6’7 despite his imposing stature, but they have a chance to be an even better defensive squad than Baylor has had in recent years. This team added smart, savvy players and shooters and have the talent to match if not exceed what we’ve seen in the last couple of years.
You’ll see Baylor in preseason Top 10 lists and we’ll see early this season if they’re up to defending that expectation with that intense first month of basketball. That starting five has a little bit of everything and those young pieces could each develop into weapons of their own off the bench. Barring injury or something unforeseen, we can expect another trip to the Big Dance for the Bears and a high finish in the Big 12; it just all depends on what happens in March after a few disappointing trips.
