One of the biggest surprises in all of NCAA Basketball last season was the play of Keaton Wagler, a former three-star prospect who ended up leading Illinois with 17.9 ppg and 4.2 apg en route to a Final Four appearance. He ended up being the 5th pick in the most recent NBA Draft.
One consequence of Wagler’s emergence was that it came at the expense of Mihailo Petrovic, a 6’3 guard from Serbia who had expectations when he joined a year ago. He ultimately ended up playing in 19 games, averaging 1.6 ppg and 1.1 apg on 33% shooting. As a result, he entered the transfer portal and is still available.

Sources indicate MASSIVE high-major interest in the former Illinois playmaker since entering the transfer portal. Texas Tech, Providence, Baylor, and Pitt are all heavily monitoring his situation!

There are still teams that can use his services as backcourt depth and another capable ball-handler. And according to this account, there are four teams reportedly in the mix. Here’s a closer look at how Petrovic would fit with each of them.
Baylor Bears
Baylor brings back Isaac Williams IV, who averaged 3.3 assists a game last year while starting 14 games. The Mingo brothers, including Kayden from Penn State and Dylan, the five-star prospect, also are ball-handlers to watch. If the Bears want the Mingos to play more off the ball, then there would be a clear pathway for Petrovic to get minutes.
Pittsburgh Panthers
After a rough past year, Pittsburgh has a completely new roster to work with. That includes Syracuse transfer Naithan George (10.9 ppg and 5.4 apg), who’ll get most of the minutes at the one-spot. The backup minutes are still available, with returning guard Macari Moore having little playing time as a freshman. After the issues they had at PG last year, Petrovic could be an option here.
Providence Friars
Georgetown transfer Malik Mack is the clear starting PG for the Friars next year. The backup minutes behind him are still open, with South Florida transfer Gavin Hightower only playing 10 mpg as a freshman and is unproven, creating a potential pathway for Petrovic to be a backup.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Christian Anderson was one of the top point guards in college basketball last season, averaging nearly eight assists a game. He’s gone but the team landed several newcomers, including 20 ppg scoring guards, Cruz Davis and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn. They also got Damarion Dennis from Wyoming and Amari Barrett, a three-star commit in the 2026 class. Since none of them are high-major players, they could use someone like Petrovic for depth purposes but there’s also a chance he’d get buried in another depth chart.
