Big East Basketball: Reaction to 2024-25 AP Top 25 preseason rankings
By John Makuch
With the preseason AP Top 25 rankings being released, we are officially close to the return of college basketball, and the debates can begin again. It was certain that UConn would be in the top three, Creighton would find themselves in the middle of everything, and potentially some other members could have been ranked in the Big East.
However, there are only those two teams that find themselves in the initial Top 25 poll, although three others received votes. So, did the voters get this right when it comes to the Big East? Or do we have some problems here in the middle of October?
UConn's ranking: just about right
The UConn Huskies are obviously the reigning back-to-back National Champions, but these polls cannot be based on past success, if that was how this worked, then Villanova would have gotten votes.
The now No. 3 Huskies lost key pieces, two top NBA prospects at that in Donovan Clingan and Stephon Castle. It is tough to slot UConn in at the top spot with their high roster turnover, especially when you factor in how good the rosters of Kansas and Alabama are shaping up to be.
UConn will have plenty of opportunities to reclaim the number one spot in all of college basketball, and for UConn fans, if anything, just appreciate the fire this will put under your team.
