With the calendar reaching the end of June, the attention of the sporting world hasn’t exactly been on college basketball. After all, we only just wrapped up an exciting NBA Finals while the World Cup also rages on American soil. However, a massive bit of news changed the trajectory of the sport and will have major ramifications.
Less than three months after leading Michigan to their second national championship in program history, head coach Dusty May is bolting Ann Arbor for the head coaching position with the Dallas Mavericks. The late June departure is already a surprise but this is a move that will have a ripple effect.
Just a few years ago, May was barely revered as head coach of Florida Atlantic and everything has changed so quickly. He took those Owls on that amazing run to the Final Four in 2023 and took the Michigan job a year later. May used the transfer portal and his available resources to quickly transform the Wolverines into a national power, with an Elite Eight in his first season and that championship this year.
Former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton Jr. takes over as interim head coach, having served on the Wolverines staff under May these last two seasons. We’re not sure yet what exactly the long-term plans are for the Michigan brass but we could see player movement or other coaching changes as a result of this major domino.
The Dallas Mavericks gain an impressive coach on the rise while the Big Ten loses one of its rising stars. With Boynton now in place in that interim role, we’re evaluating the coaching talent left in the conference and ranking the Big Ten coaches from top to bottom after this shocking departure.
