1. Tom Izzo (Michigan State)

It really is hard for anyone else in this league to compare to what Izzo has accomplished. A former player at Northern Michigan in the mid-70’s, he made his way to East Lansing under Jud Heathcote way back in 1983 and has never left. Izzo became head coach in 1995 and has spent the last thirty-plus years building a contender year after year.

Izzo most notably took the Spartans to the national championship in 2000, which had been the conference’s most recent title before Michigan’s breakthrough. He’s responsible for eight trips to the Final Four and eleven Big Ten regular season titles. He’s taken the Spartans to 28 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen runs in the last two seasons respectively.

Michigan State has been immensely successful and is almost always a contender to win this league and make noise on the national level. Izzo has coached bright stars to high heights and maintained Michigan State’s standing across his lengthy tenure and no current coach even comes close to that complete body of work.
