17. Mike Rhoades (Penn State)
You might be surprised to hear this but Rhoades has more than two decades of head coaching experience. Much of it just came at the D3 level, winning a bunch of games with Randolph-Macon before moving his way up in the world. Rhoades engineered a turnaround as head coach at Rice and then took VCU to the Big Dance three straight years but is still finding his feet at Penn State.
Rhoades has been leading the Nittany Lions since 2023 and doesn’t have a ton to show for it. His first year was probably his best, tying for 9th place in the Big Ten in a 16-win campaign before these more recent struggles. Last season, Penn State won just 12 games and finished dead last in the conference and haven’t even come close to sniffing the NCAA Tournament.
From virtually every standpoint Penn State just might be the worst basketball program in the Big Ten, especially with recent developments at a few other programs. The Nittany Lions have also been quite patient with head coaches, but it’s hard to enjoy what’s been happening in recent seasons. Finishing 17th or worse in the league two straight years doesn’t exactly have Rhoades in great standing.
