This time of year is very transformative in college basketball with NIL and the transfer portal and all the roster changes occurring these recent weeks. It seems to be an offseason where centers and reliable big men are even more valuable than usual and it’s not a surprise to see a quick landing spot for Magoon Gwath after what he’s done already in his career.
A 7-0 center from Euless, Texas, Gwath arrived three seasons ago at San Diego State and has been a reliable frontcourt anchor for the Aztecs. He redshirted his first season before finding a more important role these last two years while fighting injuries the entire time. Gwath was part of an Aztecs team that largely underwhelmed this season, but he has enormous size and potential for the near future.

DePaul lands San Diego State transfer Magoon Gwath
In his first season on the court, Gwath was among the best shot blockers in the nation, winning both MWC Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year for his efforts. This past season didn’t quite become as productive for Gwath, who missed several games and fell out of a starting role. He averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, though that was significantly fewer blocked shots than in the previous season.
The preseason favorite of many in the MWC, San Diego State fell short of the Big Dance and Gwath fell short of expectations too. He didn’t quite take that next step forward, though he did remain a reliable presence under the basket when he was on his game. Gwath had a season-high 20-points in his debut against Troy in November and did block 5 shots in a win against Nevada but now he’s focused on his next adventure.
Gwath entered the portal and was clearly an attractive name, as a 7-footer with great shot blocking potential turns heads for any program in this sport. In the end, Chris Holtmann and DePaul have attracted him to the Big East. If Gwath can stay on the court, he can become a reliable frontcourt presence even in the Big East after what he showed these last two seasons, though his size in particular is what has Holtmann and his staff really excited.
He’s not the only major presence heading to Chicago, as DePaul has already added four players via the portal in recent days. One of those additions is Wilson Jacques, a 7-footer from France who comes from Fresno State and will help reform what should be quite the frontcourt for the Blue Demons. We don’t quite know how things will come together in this rotation as more changes are made but it’s clear that Holtmann is trying to create a winner for a program that hasn’t sniffed the Big Dance in more than two decades.
