Just a few months ago, it looked like Donovan Dent's basketball career had come to an end.
The former New Mexico star announced he was retiring from the game after finishing his college career, seemingly closing the book on one of the Mountain West's most dynamic point guards in recent memory. Now, in a stunning twist, Dent has confirmed he has applied for a fifth year of NCAA eligibility, potentially putting one of the best available players back on the market just weeks before the start of the 2026-27 season.
If the NCAA grants that extra season, Dent instantly becomes one of the most intriguing names remaining in college basketball.
According to KRQE Sports Dent said the possibility of another season wasn't initially on his radar.
"I just looked at it as another opportunity because I was completely done with it, and seeing that they made a fifth year possible and all of my coaches and my family were like, 'Let's give it one more,'" Dent said. "They kind of talked to me about it, and I was like, okay. We just look at it like another opportunity for a blessing, I guess."
A proven difference-maker could suddenly be available
Unlike many late offseason additions, Dent wouldn't be a developmental piece or a player looking for a fresh start. He has already proven he can be the focal point of a winning program.
During his standout career at New Mexico, Dent developed into one of the nation's premier point guards thanks to his combination of speed, scoring ability and elite playmaking. He consistently controlled games with the ball in his hands while showing the leadership every coach covets from a veteran floor general.
Finding that caliber of point guard in July is virtually impossible. That's why Dent's eligibility decision immediately becomes one of the biggest stories remaining this offseason.
Where could Donovan Dent land?
The biggest question now is one Dent admits he doesn't have the answer to. When asked where he plans to play, Dent simply said he doesn't know yet.
That uncertainty is exactly what makes this story fascinating.
If his waiver is approved, programs around the country needing an experienced lead guard would almost certainly make calls. Teams with Final Four aspirations often discover during summer workouts that they need another veteran ball-handler, and Dent would represent one of the best options available.
Of course, there's also the possibility that he returns somewhere familiar if the right opportunity presents itself.
Until his eligibility is officially resolved, however, every possibility remains on the table.
College basketball may have gained one more star
The modern era of college basketball continues to produce unexpected twists thanks to evolving eligibility rules, NIL opportunities and the transfer portal. Dent's story is another reminder that careers once thought to be over can suddenly receive another chapter.
For now, Dent is staying connected to the game by hosting his youth basketball camp in Albuquerque, passing along the lessons that made him one of the Mountain West's top guards. But if the NCAA approves his request, his attention will quickly shift from teaching the next generation to leading another college program onto the court.
The 2026-27 season already featured plenty of compelling storylines, but Donovan Dent's potential return could become one of the biggest late additions of the entire offseason.
