When looking at Duke Basketball’s roster for the 2026-27 season, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic. They bring back several starters from last year’s group, add a 20-ppg scoring guard from Wisconsin (John Blackwell), and another top-tier incoming recruiting class that includes several five-star prospects.

One of them is Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje, a 7’2 center prospect who played at FC Barcelona. He was a consensus five-star and top-5 prospect in the 2027 class, before reclassifying and committing to play for Duke this upcoming season. He’s one of the youngest players in the sport, so young that Boumtje will have to spend two years in college basketball before being able to enter the NBA Draft.

After a summer that included MVP honors for the U17 Team USA World Cup squad who won the gold medal, Boumtje had a ton of hype for Duke. We got a first look at him in a Blue Devil uniform, starting for the team in their exhibition matchup against Belmont on Thursday night.

Boumtje had an immediate impact, scoring 10 points and grabbing five rebounds for Duke in the first eight minutes. Despite his young age, the big man looked like the best player on the floor, making plays on both ends and hitting multiple three-pointers early.

In just 22 minutes of play, Boumtje finished with 19 points on 7/11 FG shooting, seven rebounds, along with two blocks and two steals in Duke’s 102-62 preseason win over Belmont. He tied with Dame Sarr for most points in the entire game, with the Bruins having no answer as to how to stop him. We’ll see what happens when he goes up against high-major and ACC competition but it’s hard to find flaws in how Boumtje played.

Duke’s frontcourt wasn’t fully in play, with Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski out, while five-star freshman forward Cameron Williams played fewer than 15 minutes in his first game. Still, in just 22 minutes played, Boumtje proved to be highly impactful and likely too good to play limited minutes, despite being the youngest on the entire roster.

There’s early hype that Boumtje could be the first pick in the 2028 NBA Draft. There’s a long way to go in that department but he’s off to a good start. And if he plays like this when the games start to count, Duke Basketball will be Final Four contender once again.
