Duke basketball is about to step out of the offseason shadows. The Blue Devils announced Tuesday that Countdown to Craziness will take place Oct. 3 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The annual celebration will include player introductions, an intrasquad scrimmage and a dunk contest for Jon Scheyer’s team.
It will also provide the first major public evaluation of one of the deepest and most fascinating rosters in college basketball.
According to Duke Athletics, the event begins with a free Fan Fest at 3 p.m. ET. The men’s and women’s teams will make blue-carpet appearances at 5:30 p.m., doors will open at 6 p.m. and the arena program will begin at 7 p.m.
Duke’s Depth Will Receive Its First Real Showcase
Last season, everything at Duke revolved around Cameron Boozer.
Boozer produced a dominant freshman season before entering the NBA Draft, leaving Scheyer to replace an elite scorer and rebounder. The coach’s solution was not to find another player capable of copying Boozer. It was to build a roster overflowing with options.
Wisconsin transfer John Blackwell gives Duke an experienced scorer in the backcourt. Returning guards Cayden Boozer and Caleb Foster already understand Scheyer’s system, while freshman Deron Rippey Jr. arrives with the athleticism to earn immediate minutes.
The frontcourt is just as interesting.
Patrick Ngongba II returns as an experienced interior presence. Seven-foot freshman Cameron Williams is one of the most highly regarded players in Duke’s recruiting class, and Belmont transfer Drew Scharnowski gives Scheyer another versatile option.
The official Duke roster also includes Bryson Howard, Dame Sarr, Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje and Maxime Meyer. Unlike recent Duke teams built around an obvious one-and-done centerpiece, this group could require several players to share the spotlight.
That is what makes the Countdown scrimmage more than a ceremonial opening.
Who handles the ball with the projected starters? Can Williams play alongside Ngongba? Which freshman looks ready for a significant role? Does Blackwell immediately appear comfortable as Duke’s leading perimeter scorer?
Scheyer will have several additional opportunities to answer those questions before the regular season. Duke hosts Belmont in a scrimmage Oct. 8 and Tennessee in an exhibition Oct. 20 before traveling to Kansas for another exhibition Oct. 25.
The regular season begins Nov. 2 against Army.
Duke has enough talent to enter another season with national championship expectations. Countdown to Craziness will offer the first glimpse of whether all those impressive pieces already fit together.
