With the transfer portal dried up, the international pipeline has become the most active way for college basketball teams to acquire talent. The latest key name to watch is Nikola Kusturica, a 6’8 small forward from Serbia. He’s been a standout performer in FIBA international competitions, while also playing in the prestigious Liga ACB and EuroLeague.
The 17-year-old has been sought after by a number of big-name programs, and the latest from Jack Pilgrim of KSR has the list of teams in the mix. Kusturica reportedly wants a two-year deal and is viewed as a legit 2028 NBA Draft prospect.Â
#Michigan right in the mix for one of the top international prospects in 6-foot-8 Serbian wing Nikola Kusturica.

Assuming he does end up coming to the States, here’s a look at how he’d fit with each of the options.
Arizona Wildcats
Coach Tommy Lloyd had a great past freshman class, including a pair of projected first-round NBA Draft picks, Brayden Burries and Koa Peat. But after missing out on Milan Momcilovic this offseason, there is room for another forward to join the roster for the upcoming season. With top-30 wing prospect Cam Holmes set to get a lot of minutes, Kusturica would get some playing time as a freshman. Although with Holmes and Ivan Kharchenkov in the fold, playing time in year two wouldn’t be as much for him either.Â
Duke Blue Devils
Duke already has a two-year plan in place with a young prospect, five-star center Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje. The Blue Devils bring back Dame Sarr and add five-star prospect Bryson Howard in the fold, two guys who’ll likely be gone after next year. This is an option where Kusturica would have little room for playing time as a freshman, but would in year two.Â
Gonzaga Bulldogs
The news that international guard prospect Jack Kayil decided to go to the NBA Draft instead allowed the Bulldogs to focus on another impact newcomer on the perimeter. Gonzaga doesn’t have too much depth outside of sophomore Davis Fogle, with Houston transfer Isiah Harwell also set to get minutes. The Bulldogs have a great history with international players, and Kusturica could get key minutes in both years. Plus, he could thrive playing in the Pac-12, boosting his stats and securing a high spot in the 2028 NBA Draft.Â
Kentucky Wildcats
After a bad start to the offseason, Kentucky has built a roster good enough to compete for next year. They landed Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic for at least the next year, along with James Madison transfer Justin McBride. There’s also a top-50 redshift freshman, Braydon Hawthorne, on the roster who should compete for minutes at the wing. As a two-year option, this makes sense for Kusturica, assuming Momcilovic and McBride are both gone to make room on the wings.
Louisville Cardinals
Like Arizona, Louisville also missed out on Momcilovic. The ACC team has one of the best projected starting lineups but lacks depth, especially on the wings. Arkansas transfer Karter Knox and freshman Botuan Zhang, creating an opportunity for someone like Kusturica to come in and have an immediate impact. The question is does Louisville want to pay that much for a role player next year instead of just getting a traditional transfer a year from now?
Michigan Wolverines
The Wolverines have plenty of frontcourt depth and even at guard, despite LJ Cason’s injury. In terms of true wings, Michigan doesn’t have many, likely playing either three-forward or three-guard lineups, with five-star prospect Brandon McCoy Jr. there alongside Trey McKenney and Elliot Cadeau. Kusturica would get minutes as a freshman for the reigning national champions and likely be a focal point of the offense in year two, since so many of these players will be gone a year from now.
North Carolina Tar Heels
New head coach Michael Malone has made a few international splashes this offseason, landing big men Sayon Keita and Alex Samodurov. Kusturica would be a nice addition on the wings, which will be played mostly by NC State transfer Matt Able and four-star freshman Maximo Adams. Considering that Able came back from the NBA Draft process with an expectation that he’ll get a large share of minutes, it may not be the ideal destination for him.
UCLA Bruins
In the past, Coach Mick Cronin didn’t have great success with international prospects. But Kusturica could be too good to overlook. Last year, the Bruins switched between three-guard lineups and Eric Dailey Jr. at the three, and it appears to be open again for a wing like Kusturica to come in and have an impact. It’s another option in which the international target would have a larger role in year two, but Cronin’s systems certainly benefit those who are around for multiple years rather than just one.
