For one reason or another, Duquesne Basketball can never win at Davidson. However, it looked as if the streak would be broken, with the Dukes up by as much as 12 at one point and holding a 42-38 halftime lead. Unfortunately for them, they couldn’t hold on, as they allowed the Wildcats to shoot 60% in the second half to lose, 77-71 to fall to 1-1 in A-10 play.

Plenty of developments occurred during the game. Here’s a look at the biggest takeaways from the game.

1. Jahsean Corbett emerges as a legit go-to option

Only one player was in double figures for the Dukes in the game, but Corbett was the main reason they have a shot at winning the game. He went for a career-high 29 points on 12/20 shooting, including an impressive (by his standards) 4/6 from the FT line. The Dukes have been looking for consistency on offense, and Corbett is the one guy who can be relied upon to be a double-digit contributor. He’s not a perfect player, but he should be getting 12-15 FG attempts a game for them to avoid constant droughts.

2. Jakub Necas absence was felt throughout the game

At the end of the game against Rhode Island, Necas looked to have suffered a head injury of sorts, and it must have been severe enough for him to miss the game. Not only is he a three-point threat, but he’s easily the most versatile defender. In a game where Reed Bailey dominated inside, and David Dixon fouled out late, Duquesne could’ve used him as a backup center. Had he been available, maybe the Dukes could’ve pulled it out.

3. Good minutes from Maximus Edwards

Outside of Corbett’s play and Cam Crawford making a few three-pointers, there weren’t many bright spots for the Dukes on offense. However, one positive was Edwards coming off the bench with nine points in 15 minutes, including four rebounds. For the last few games, he was buried on the bench and seemingly out of the rotation.

But for a team that lacks scoring depth and after Tre Dinkins went scoreless in the game, having Edwards being available and effective is something Duquesne Basketball badly needs. We’ll see if his play earned more minutes in the upcoming game against St. Joe’s.
