Despite the Final Four and national title game happening less than a week ago, many have already turned the page in the college basketball calendar. The transfer portal is open for business and there’s a lot of early activity already. Providence has already added a major piece a few days into this process, bolstering their defense with former San Diego State star Miles Byrd.

A 6-7 wing out of Stockton, California, Byrd arrived at San Diego State in 2022 and was largely a backup player as the Aztecs advanced to the national title game in his first season. He earned his place on the court in the following seasons, becoming a key backup as a sophomore before developing into a major role as a starter these last two years.

Providence lands San Diego State transfer Miles Byrd

During his third collegiate season and his first as a starter, Byrd earned Second Team All-MWC honors and stepped into that big role for the Aztecs, putting up more than 12 points per game and becoming a key part of their elite defense. This past season didn’t see a step forward, as he averaged 10.4 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, but Byrd was still a menace, earning Defensive Player of the Year honors in the Mountain West.

Byrd dropped a few 20-point performances this season, including in a nice January win over New Mexico, but his scoring wasn’t really what he’s revered for. Byrd is a fantastic defensive presence, ranking in the Top 5 in the MWC in both steals and blocks this past season. You’re not getting 20 points a night out of him but you will get plenty of effort on both sides of the ball.

After what was certainly an underwhelming season for San Diego State, his entry into the portal certainly indicated that the Aztecs were moving forward and in a new direction and the same can certainly be said of Byrd. He gets a chance to make bank and will play prominent ball with Providence in the Big East, joining a Friars team among the weakest in the entire nation at generating steals.

Byrd is an important first step forward for incoming head coach Bryan Hodgson as he looks to build a contender at Providence. It’s far too early to know or understand just what the Friars rotation will look like in the coming weeks and for next season, but Byrd is absolutely a great and underrated piece. If he can bring that same intensity on defense while also taking a step forward on offense then perhaps he can be an All-Big East player.
