Less than nine months after Texas Tech eliminated Arkansas from the NCAA tournament with a two-point overtime win, 85-83, the pair of top 25 squads meet again before their respective conference schedules begin at the end of the month.
John Calipari’s first year in Fayetteville included a run to the Sweet 16 as a 10 seed, but the Hogs could not take down the Red Raiders, who fell to eventual champion Florida in the next round. Arkansas has reloaded with two talented freshmen guards to go along with some holdovers from last year’s team. The Razorbacks’ losses have come away from Bud Walton Arena in a true road contest against Michigan State and a neutral court match with Duke.
Texas Tech spent big in the offseason to keep J.T. Toppin and Christian Anderson in Lubbock, but the duo has yet to secure a marquee win in the young season. The Red Raiders fell on the road to Illinois by four and suffered a 30-point beatdown at the hands of Purdue in the Bahamas. Since then, Texas Tech has won three straight including a 24-point win over LSU in Fort Worth.

The Red Raiders offense runs through Toppin, but how Arkansas defends the three-point line may decide the game. Arkansas surrenders a ton of deep ball opportunities, and Texas Tech likes to hoist it from beyond the arch. Anderson and Atwell both shoot over 40 percent from deep, so if they can provide spacing for Toppin to work down low it could be a long day for the Hogs defense.
Texas Tech’s concerns lie at the charity stripe where it connects on less than 68 percent of attempts. The Red Raiders don’t get to the line much, and Arkansas has been one of the best teams at defending without fouling. Texas Tech must rely on its starting lineup to carry the load as the bench has not provided much help early this season.
Can Arkansas avenge the March loss and score a second top 25 win in December or will Texas Tech’s starting five overwhelm the SEC opponent to pick up its biggest win to date?
