We’re getting some very entertaining basketball out of the ACC again this season and these two teams that meet Saturday afternoon can certainly bring that. Duke heads to Virginia Tech for their latest conference battle, as the Blue Devils look to continue a hot streak while the Hokies hunt for another breakthrough performance against a nationally ranked foe.

The only blemish for Duke (19-1) came over a month ago against a Texas Tech team that’s been on fire, falling by just a single point to the Red Raiders. Let’s not act like the Blue Devils haven’t had a few tests in league play, with a few closer calls than expected against ACC foes. However, Duke has really found themselves in recent weeks and has won each of their last four games by at least 15 points, including this week’s blowout over Louisville.

It’s not surprising to hear that Virginia Tech (16-6) isn’t quite in the same advantageous position. The Hokies struck gold with a triple overtime win against Virginia to kick off ACC play but it hasn’t been smooth sailing since. They lost very winnable matchups against Wake Forest, Stanford (at home), and SMU, and haven’t really shown that they can be a conference power with their recent play.

Projected Starting Lineups

Duke Blue Devils

Cameron Boozer (23.5 ppg, 9.9 rpg, 4.1 apg)

Isaiah Evans (14.5 ppg, 3.4 rpg)

Patrick Ngongba II (11.2 ppg, 6.1 rpg)

Caleb Foster (8.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg)

Dame Sarr (5.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg)

Virginia Tech Hokies

Amani Hansberry (14.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg)

Ben Hammond (12.9 ppg, 3.3 apg)

Neoklis Avdalas (12.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 4.9 apg)

Jailen Bedford (10.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg)

Tobi Lawal (11.7 ppg, 8.9 rpg)

Virginia Tech comes into action with a major opportunity to prove themselves but it’s the kind of game where a lot of things need to go their way. Does this team have any chance of slowing down Boozer? Hansberry and Lawal are both solid pieces but Virginia Tech’s entire defense needs to play better than they have been during league play. The interior scoring has been a dud recently for the Hokies but you know that Boozer, Ngongba, and company have a real chance to control the paint and turn this into a laugher. It’s going to take a heroic effort from the Hokies to slow the roll of the Blue Devils.

Does Duke sail through for another easy win on the road? Can Virginia Tech find another gear and find some way to slow down that recent roll? It’ll be interesting to see how things progress in this game, especially with Virginia Tech desperate for a breakthrough.
