There was a significant stretch of time when Florida and Kentucky were the two best and brightest of the SEC, though the conference as a whole is much better these days. The regular season finale will see a highly-anticipated rematch between these Gators and Wildcats, but who is going to take care of business in this Saturday action in Lexington?

No team in this conference is hotter than Florida (24-6), and the Gators have won the SEC regular season title for a reason. Now sitting at 15-2 in the league, Florida has run off ten straight wins and are starting to situate themselves for March Madness, hoping they can produce another stellar run after last year’s national championship. Even while resting leading scorer Thomas Haugh, this team still topped 100 points last time out over Mississippi State.

The road has been rockier for Kentucky (19-11), but this is still certainly a talented contender who can win impactful games. The Wildcats have won over the likes of St. John’s, Arkansas, Tennessee, and most recently upended Vanderbilt last weekend. Things aren’t exactly perfect in Lexington, and Mark Pope’s team would love to be better than 10-7 in the SEC, but they have quite the opportunity here to grab some momentum.

Projected Starting Lineups

Florida Gators

Alex Condon (14.8 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 3.6 apg)

Xaivian Lee (11.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.1 apg)

Boogie Fland (11.5 ppg, 3.4 apg)

Rueben Chinyelu (11.3 ppg, 11.8 rpg)

Micah Handlogten (4.3 ppg, 6.0 rpg)

Kentucky Wildcats

Otega Oweh (17.9 ppg, 4.5 rpg)

Denzel Aberdeen (12.8 ppg, 3.5 apg)

Collin Chandler (10.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg)

Malachi Moreno (8.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg)

Andrija Jelavic (5.8 ppg, 3.9 rpg)

The first thing to consider is what this game means to these teams. Florida’s frontcourt really showed up as usual in the first matchup, but Lee’s 22-point outpouring helped lead the charge in a 9-point victory. If Haugh is resting, Kentucky has an opportunity, but let’s not act like Handlogten isn’t capable in his role. The Wildcats need to find more consistency on both ends, and especially with a defense that’s likely to give up a ton of points to these Gators again. With their title secured, Florida is riding high into the postseason but Kentucky could really use a great showing at home to cap off a regular season full of ups and downs and it all depend on what type of effort Pope’s team plays with out there.

Will we see Florida finish a season sweep over the Wildcats and ride into the postseason on an 11-game winning streak? Can Kentucky stem the tide, get back on track, and start building their own momentum for March?
