One of Saturday’s most notable matchups comes late at night as these two teams battle in the Big 12. It’s a fight between a pair of Cougars as Houston matches up against BYU in another ranked battle. This showdown comes highly anticipated, though it suddenly matches two teams trending in completely opposite directions here in early February.

Things are looking up for Houston (20-2), as these Cougars have lost just a single game in Big 12 play and look like a true contender. Houston split a pair of intense matchups with Texas Tech along the way to their 8-1 start. Once again, the defense has come in clutch and played an important role for the Cougars, especially in recent wins over Cincinnati and UCF last week.

On the other side, things are falling apart for BYU (17-5) and they desperately need to stop the bleeding. These Cougars have suddenly lost three games in a row and four of their last five and are just 5-4 in the conference. Losing at Kansas and Texas Tech is understandable, as is dropping a close battle against top-ranked Arizona, but this team went to Oklahoma State this week and gave up 99 points in a really rough loss.

It doesn’t matter that this game is in Provo as opposed to Houston, if BYU’s defense doesn’t play significantly better than they won’t have a chance to bounce back. The Cougars are known for their shutdown defense and will certainly have a plan to limit the Big 3 of BYU. It’s not just about getting Dybantsa and Saunders open looks but having a solid gameplan on both sides of the ball. They need an answer to slow down the Cougars, especially those two dynamic freshmen. With Flemings’ explosiveness and creativity and Cenac’s power and strength, they could make this another forgettable night for BYU.

Does Houston just keep rolling and putting themselves in great shape both in the Big 12 and the national picture? Could we see someone beyond the usual suspects put together a great performance and get BYU back over the hump once again?
