The Big 12 provides yet another major matchup between two of its top teams in this Saturday afternoon battle with significant implications. Less than three weeks after meeting in Lawrence, Kansas and Arizona face off for the second time this season, both hoping to continue building momentum for March and the important games ahead.

Recent weeks have been a real up and down affair for Kansas (21-7) and that’s saying something. The Jayhawks have knocked off every single team in the upper echelon of the Big 12 during league play, but also were blown out at Iowa State and were blindsided at home by Cincinnati over the last two weekends. Bill Self has to keep pushing forward, ignore the noise around Darryn Peterson, and try to find a way to get another emphatic road win.

This entire season for Arizona (26-2) boils down to one bad week and a ton of incredible wins around it. The Wildcats lost to Kansas and Texas Tech two weeks ago, but aside from that have one of the nation’s most impressive resumes. They’ve beaten UConn, Florida, Alabama, swept BYU, and just got a crazy road win at Houston last weekend. Even without the injured Koa Peat, the Wildcats are riding high and look like a top contender.

When these teams faced off a few weeks ago, Arizona saw their unbeaten season come to an end in a game where Kansas didn’t even have Peterson in the lineup. Things will be different in round two in Tucson. The Wildcats actually outshot and outrebounded Kansas in that earlier matchup and getting this game on their home floor will certainly help matters. It’s all about containing those key Jayhawks like Council and Bidunga, who had twin 23-point performances last time around. If Arizona does a better job defensively without allowing the Jayhawks to live at the charity stripe then they should be able to soar to another win, though don’t count out what Peterson’s presence could mean.

Fresh off a bounce back effort against Houston, could we see Kansas actually get a sweep over the Wildcats with another consistent performance in a big time game? On the contrary, does Arizona simply keep rolling during this tough stretch and basically put away the Big 12 title race?
