There’s still a lot of basketball left to be played this season but this mid-January matchup pits two very solid ACC teams against each other. Both Miami and Clemson have gotten off to perfect starts a few weeks into league play. Each team hunts for a major win not only to stay among the unbeaten in the league but to put themselves in the best position possible for when March rolls around.
The news is largely good out of Miami (15-2), where the Hurricanes have won ten games in a row since a tough loss against BYU back on Thanksgiving. Miami is far from a perfect team under new head coach Jai Lucas, but the offense has been at a high level in recent weeks as this talented team looks to contend right away in the ACC. The Hurricanes already have an impressive road win at Wake Forest and are hoping for what would already be their fourth true road victory.
A similar story can be told from Clemson (15-3), as these Tigers have run off eight straight wins since their own recent loss to BYU in early December. Clemson grabbed wins over Clemson and West Virginia but wasted a few real opportunities in nonconference play, but Brad Brownell’s crew isn’t wasting those chances in league play. They’ve notched five straight wins, including over a then-ranked SMU, and are hoping to continue this hot trend.

Clemson has utilizing a balanced approach while Miami is leaning on some strong players like Reneau and Donaldson, two of the top scorers in the ACC. If the Hurricanes are going to make a statement on the road, they’ll need their stars to show up in a big way but let’s not pretend like Clemson isn’t here too. The Tigers have been really good at home this season and their defense has been quality in ACC play. They just need to keep playing smart balanced basketball and find a way to contain Reneau’s ability to affect the game on multiple levels. Neither of these teams is going down without a fight and this could be one of the better battles on Saturday in any league.
Can Miami formulate enough offense on the road to pull off another upset and really assert themselves as an ACC contender? Can Clemson continue what’s been a truly impressive start to league play and show that they’re once again one of the league’s best?
