The greatest rivalry in college basketball reengages on Saturday evening in Durham and there’s always intrigue when Duke and North Carolina meet. When these two met nearly a month ago, it was a 3-pointers in the final seconds that delivered a massive win at home for the Tar Heels. However, things have changed and with Duke back on their home court, there could be quite the dish of revenge served.
Punctuated by that big win last month, North Carolina (24-6) has spent their season trying to prove that they’re a contender and perhaps the second-best team in the ACC. What has brought down the Tar Heels is some rough showings on the road, as they were perfect at home this season with some regrettable road performances. Riding a four-game winning streak, including nice wins over Clemson and Louisville, this team hopes to make a statement despite being shorthanded for the rest of the year.
This whole season for Duke (28-2) has been about making statements. Sitting as the top-ranked team in the nation, it’s clear that they’re coming in loud and clear. The Blue Devils recently upended Michigan and have a whole host of impressive wins this season. That devastating ending in Chapel Hill remains their only loss since late December and Duke knows they can make quite the statement in this rematch.

We mentioned that North Carolina is short-handed and that really hurts this team who’ll be without leading scorer Caleb Wilson for the rest of the season. The inspiring freshman was a leader and key cog for a Tar Heels team that suddenly looks overmatched in this rematch. Boozer was brilliant with 24 points and 11 rebounds last time and that’s one less body to stop him and to match his production. Wilson had 23 points in the first game and if North Carolina is going to pull another shocker than they really need somebody to step up in a major way. Duke’s defense is no joke and it might take a herculean effort to upend them on the road.
Even without their young star, is there a way that North Carolina can somehow pull off an unexpected sweep over their bitter rivals? Will we instead see Duke continue their recent roll while getting much-needed revenge over the Tar Heels?
