The latest matchup in one of the sport’s best rivalry comes to fruition on Tuesday night in this important Big Ten faceoff. Purdue and Indiana renew a rivalry filled with hate and exciting moments both in recent memories and throughout the histories of these programs. Purdue has had the upper hand lately but Indiana got the upper hand last year in Bloomington; can they take care of business again?
It’s not the greatest time for Purdue (17-3) as the Boilermakers are reeling after a pair of losses last week. This program had been rolling throughout most of the first two and a half months of the season before blowing it late at UCLA and then falling at home against Illinois. Matt Painter knows his lineup can win big games and be very productive but their defense needs to step up in these coming weeks.
Recently in free fall themselves, Indiana (13-7) has looked competitive in the first season for Darian DeVries at the helm, but a 4-5 mark in the Big Ten is certainly underwhelming to most. Prior to Friday’s win at Rutgers, the Hoosiers had lost four straight games, with all coming against strong Big Ten foes. This might be a rivalry game but can they put everything together in another major test?

Neither of these teams have exactly been shining on the defensive end during Big Ten play and it’s fair to wonder just how this game plays out. The Boilermakers win this game if they come out inspired after those two really tough losses last week. Smith will be the best player on the court, though don’t discount what DeVries and Wilkerson mean to this Indiana offense. Whichever defense can limit open shots outside and second chance opportunities wins this game. The Boilermakers need a strong effort in this hostile road environment, while a desperate Indiana team really needs to show that they can beat a top-level foe this season.
Is this the night where Purdue gets back on track and shows that they’re still a national contender? Does Indiana finally find a way to get over the top against an elite Big Ten team? Which defense will shine in Bloomington and get their team back on track?
