Wednesday evening presents us with what is certainly the most important regular season game of the Big East season. Nearly three weeks after their first contest, the two top teams in the league standings rematch as UConn welcomes St. John’s to town with revenge on their mind. It’s a contest that will absolutely help decide the regular season champion of the Big East.
You won’t find many teams on a hotter streak than St. John’s (22-5) right now, as the Red Storm have run off 13 wins in a row to put themselves in fantastic shape. They had some shooting and defensive lapses earlier in the year, but Rick Pitino’s squad has caught fire at the right time, with a long winning streak that includes that important home win over UConn earlier this month. One more victory over the Huskies and they almost clinch the conference already.
The work out of UConn (25-3) has been impressive once again this season, much like the teams that cut down the nets just two and three seasons ago. The Huskies had their own long streak of success, winning 18 straight games over a long period before St. John’s stopped them in their tracks. While UConn has looked elite this season, they’re just a week removed from a stunning home loss against Creighton and can’t afford to play flat again.

Braylon Mullins (12.3 ppg, 3.5 rpg)
When these two teams met earlier in February, UConn actually outshot the Red Storm, but it was a strong second half from St. John’s that put the game out of reach for the Huskies. Clearly, Pitino wants his team to shoot the ball better, especially in a hostile road environment. They’ll need Ejiofor at his best once again after that 21-point, 10-rebound, 7-assist effort in the first matchup. UConn doesn’t want a repeat of last time where they were outworked down the stretch, while Demary and others struggled with turnovers despite great shooting numbers. UConn really needs to assert themselves and show that they’re truly the best team in the Big East.
Can St. John’s really complete a stunning season sweep and all but clinch another Big East regular season title? Will we instead see a great bounce back effort as UConn asserts their elite standing and pulls back into the top spot in the conference?
