Wednesday night brings us to what surprisingly amounts to a very important game in the SEC conference race. Texas A&M will do battle with Alabama in Tuscaloosa in a matchup between teams just outside of the national Top 25 rankings. When they’re at their best, these two teams fit the bill of conference contenders and we’ll see who comes out on top.

After a slow start, Texas A&M (17-4) has really found their groove deeper into season one under Bucky McMillan’s leadership. The Aggies sit atop the league standings with an impressive 7-1 mark. While they’ve avoided a few of the league’s contenders, let’s not pretend like Texas A&M is beating up on nobodies, as they won games at Auburn, Georgia, and Texas in the last month and are always ready for the next challenge.

An oddly different tale is told by Alabama (14-7) with the way their season is progressing. A team that doesn’t shy away from challenges, the Crimson Tide have picked up a number of losses this season, but it’s that 4-4 record in the SEC that really surprised. They’ve already dropped a pair of home games in league play and are just a few days removed from a 23-point loss at Florida in which they allowed 100 points for the first time this season.

These teams are trending in different directions but let’s not even pretend that that makes this matchup a foregone conclusion. Alabama has incredible talent and a stunning offense but it’s all about how their defense shows up. Having home court advantage is significant, but both teams have shown why that’s not the end-all. The Crimson Tide need to do a better job at hitting outside shots and containing second chance opportunities while the Aggies must continue to play smart basketball. Texas A&M has done a marvelous job containing those outside opportunities and will need to repeat that to win in Tuscaloosa.

Their recent success is impressive, but can Texas A&M build on this conference lead and find another gear to win on the road again? Could we see a bounce back performance from a Crimson Tide team that has underwhelmed but that has the pieces to be a real contender?
