This season has shown us just who the real contenders are in the Big 12 and you could certainly count Texas Tech and BYU among that group. However, a lot has changed for both programs since their meeting in Lubbock nearly two months ago. Both teams have suffered a massive season-ending injury to one of their stars and it’s affected the trajectory of both teams and this entire conference.
While Texas Tech (22-8) has mostly stayed afloat in recent weeks, the injury to JT Toppin was a devastating loss. Instead of torpedoing their season, the Red Raiders somehow put together a huge road win at Iowa State last weekend without their injured star. Unfortunately, they followed that up with a tough home loss against TCU and are just looking for some clarity and momentum to finish the regular season.
The news is just as tough for BYU (20-10), as the Cougars will be without Richie Saunders for the rest of this season. This team still boasts a talented lineup that features future NBA lottery pick AJ Dybantsa, but the wheels have really come off down the stretch. BYU has lost three straight games, four of their last five, and simply aren’t the same team without Saunders in the lineup. It’s hard to believe they were 16-1 before that first matchup against Texas Tech.

When these teams met in January, Toppin led the charge in a Texas Tech win with 27 points and 13 rebounds while Saunders was valiant with 18 points himself. What we’ve seen this then has put plenty of pressure on these lineups. Dybantsa remains a star figure but the rest of BYU’s roster just hasn’t been up to snuff and that’s a big reason for this recent slide. The Cougars have to do a better job defensively, as you know Anderson will be looking to lead his team to another key road win. Even with Toppin’s absence, Texas Tech’s interior offense has been really good and BYU has quite the task ahead to keep up, even in their home finale.
Will we see Texas Tech bounce back and get a pretty nice win to finish off their regular season? Is this the night when everything starts coming together for BYU or is their season already doomed without Saunders in this lineup?
