We’re only just scratching the very surface of holiday tournaments, with Thanksgiving still a week away. Nevertheless, the Baha Mar Championship is giving us quite the treat in their title game on Friday night, pitting ranked Purdue and Texas Tech teams against each other in their first matchup in seven years.
The pieces for Texas Tech (4-1) haven’t all been there this season, though JT Toppin looked like a national star even in defeat against a strong Illinois squad last season. The Red Raiders have otherwise taken care of their business, scratching out a 1-point win over Wake Forest Thursday night to get into this title game. It’s a game they enter with hopes to really put their season on the map here in November.
There aren’t yet any blemishes for Purdue (5-0), the team that was many people’s preseason favorite to cut down the nets in early April. Nothing about their early play has discouraged that potential, surviving games without star forward Trey Kaufman-Renn before getting a major road win last week over Alabama. In their semifinal, the Boilermakers had a close battle with Memphis before pulling away late for a 9-point victory.

With their work already this season, Texas Tech won’t be intimidated by the #1 team in the nation. Purdue’s offense has been playing at a high level as expected this season and the Red Raiders will need to find a way to limit the Boilermakers, especially from outside. Those interior battles between these strong frontcourts will be exciting to watch, as Kaufman-Renn and Toppin are two of the best in the nation.
The final game at this neutral-site in the Bahamas could provide quite the intrigue. Does Texas Tech have an upset up their sleeves or do the Boilermakers continue a perfect start to the season and really punctuate that they are the team to beat this year in college hoops?
