It’s a Saturday full of regular season finales and the SEC standings will still be shaped by this action. Among those notable matchups this weekend is this rematch, as in-state rivals Tennessee and Vanderbilt meet for the second time in 15 days. The Volunteers snagged a key road win in Nashville in the first matchup, but will the Commodores get similar road revenge in round two?
After a brilliant start to the season, Vanderbilt (23-7) has sort of fallen back down to the earth, now sitting just 10-7 in the SEC. There’s nothing wrong with that mark for a team that was an afterthought in the league for several years, but the Commodores have lost three of their last five games and just aren’t playing at the same level as in big wins over teams like Alabama and Kentucky.
A recent hot trend catapulted Tennessee (21-9) back into contention in the SEC, but they’ve hit their own slump in recent weeks. A brilliant month saw road wins over Alabama, Georgia and Vanderbilt, but the Volunteers have now dropped two of their last three games and could again be without star freshman Nate Ament, who missed this week’s win over South Carolina.

Amari Evans (3.6 ppg, 3.0 rpg)
A lot is resting on Ament’s health, and it’s clear that he’s one of the big reasons why Tennessee is in this position. He had 13 points and 9 rebounds two weeks ago in Nashville and his absence would certainly swing a lot of potential back towards the Commodores. Whichever teams can find their footing gives themselves the better chance to win, and you know that Tanner and the rest of this Vanderbilt lineup will have revenge on their minds. Regardless of injuries, the Volunteers really need one last special performance from Gillespie in his final game in Knoxville, while it might not hurt to have someone like Boswell or Evans really step up offensively.
Does Vanderbilt mount a brilliant bounce back performance and steal this one on the road to grab their revenge? Regardless of Ament’s health, can Tennessee’s defense carry them to another victory and do their playmakers make enough things happen to win?
