Gillespie ran out of eligibility, and Ament was always going to be a one-and-done, getting picked in the NBA Draft lottery. But Tennessee had a roster exodus, with five other rotation players electing to enter the transfer portal. For most other teams, that would hurt their grades. But what Tennessee did in the portal itself made that point moot.
No other team in the country landed five players who averaged 15+ ppg this offseason. One of them is Harris, a top-tier scorer from the ACC and the likely go-to option for the Vols next year. Haralson is a former five-star prospect who had a big first year at Notre Dame, while Ames led Cal in scoring last year. Rubin isn’t the same kind of scorer as the others, but the two-time All-Atlantic 10 defender will anchor the defense.
After having just two quality scorers on the roster last season, Tennessee now has several go-to options who can lead them in scoring. After multiple years of barely missing the Final Four, this is the roster with the expectation of getting there and making program history.
Grade: A+
