Houston adds more offensive firepower after low-scoring national title defeat

Kelvin Sampson needs to replace LJ Cryer's scoring pop in his backcourt, so he added Creighton transfer and former Texas Tech guard Pop Isaacs from the transfer portal.

After losing in the National Championship to Florida, Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars immediately got to work in the transfer portal. On Tuesday, they acquired former Creighton guard Pop Isaacs, who can provide much-needed scoring for Houston.

Isaacs, who also played for Texas Tech, averaged 16.4 points, five rebounds, and four assists per game in eight contests before needing hip surgery, which ended his season. He was playing at the level expected of him offensively, and it was a huge loss for Creighton who also was looking for a spark on the offensive side of the ball.

Isaacs notably had a 27-point, seven-rebound, and four-assist outburst against Kansas, which was the No.1 team in the nation at the time. He now finds himself with a team looking to load back up for another run at a National Championship. Houston gets a scoring guard in the portal but the only concern is his injury history.

Houston is also projected to return four of its top seven scorers, Emanuel Sharp, Milos Uzan, Terrance Arceneaux, and Joseph Tugler. For a team that made it all the way to the end of the NCAA Tournament, getting someone like Isaacs is a situation where the rich just get richer.

He is no stranger to the Big 12, while with the Red Raiders, he earned All-Freshman Team honors and was selected to the All-Big 12 third team. The conference has changed quite a bit since then, but he will still see some familiar faces from his Texas Tech days.

For the Cougars, Isaacs could see a huge role in this offense, especially if Uzan does end up leaving. With LJ Cryer gone as well, Sampson's team needed a backcourt presence who can get to the basket with ease and create his own shot. Isaacs showed plenty of shot-creation in his short stint with the Bluejays.

Isaacs was getting projections to go to Ole Miss instead, but he opted for the NCAA runner-up instead. Isaacs clearly wants to be a part of a major contender as he nears the end of his college career, and what better team to be a part of than Houston? Sampson is a coach players clearly want to play for as we have seen, and Isaacs adds to that list of players.

There are still plenty of moves left to be made for the Houston Cougars, but it is clear they have their backcourt figured out a bit more with this addition. The real question for this team is who will they add to this transfer class alongside him?
