One of the top point guards in the college basketball 2027 recruiting class is Reese Alston, a 6’3 guard out of the state of Texas. He’s the son of former NBA guard Rafer Alston and was a standout this Summer on the AAU Circuit. The younger Alston is an outstanding pure scorer, averaging over 20 ppg last season at Second Baptist in High School, and can create offense for himself and others with ease.
Alston is the latest five-star prospect to put out a list of options, with seven teams officially in the mix. Does any stand out in terms of roster fit and the ability to win? Here’s a close look at how he fits with each of them.

Houston Cougars
Coach Kelvin Sampson has a great track record of guard development throughout his coaching career, including last year’s five-star freshman, Kingston Flemings. He had a great season with the Cougars and became a top-10 NBA Draft pick. The team has LSU transfer Dedan Thomas Jr. and incoming top-30 guard Ikenna Alozie, but assuming Thomas is a draft candidate after next season, the path would be clear for Alston to stay close to home and play for the Big 12 juggernauts.
Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats already have five-star shooting guard Ryan Hampton committed in the 2027 class, and pairing him with Alston would be an ideal future incoming group. But the two incoming transfer guards, Zoom Diallo and Alex Wilkins, each have multiple years of eligibility and aren’t currently viewed as NBA Draft candidates. It ultimately could work itself out as those two could either be good enough to go pro or have to transfer out due to being underwhelming. But Alston would likely have to wait to see how it looks on the court before deciding to choose the Wildcats.
Louisville Cardinals
Coach Pat Kelsey can claim credit for Mikel Brown Jr., a former five-star prospect who had a strong season with the Cardinals and ultimately became a top-10 NBA Draft pick. They’re set to be led by Oregon transfer Jackson Shelstad, as well as 5th-year senior Seth Trimble. There’s a good chance Shelstad will be gone by next season, opening it up for Alston to come in and be the program’s lead guard for 2027-28.
LSU Tigers
A lot is going on at LSU right now, including whether or not any of the recent pickups will be cleared for next season. Either way, the program will have to rebuild a year from now, and they’ll certainly have the financial resources to make a compelling offer. The major question is what the rest of the roster would look like if Alston were to pick anytime soon.
Tennessee Volunteers
Coach Rick Barnes has history with five-star prospects, including Nate Ament going into the lottery of last year’s draft, along with the success of guys like Kennedy Chandler and Jaden Springer. Even if Cal transfer Dai Dai Ames were to come back for a 5th year at Tennessee, he and Alston would work fine in a potentially backcourt pairing a year from now.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Coach Mark Byington’s breakout story with Tyler Tanner is drawing interest from top prospects, including the likes of Alston. Assuming that Tanner leaves for the draft a year from now, Alston can come in and be the next lead guard and get the benefits that come from that in this offensive system.
Wichita State Shockers
The Shockers have been an early team on Alston, and it’s paying off, becoming a true contender to land him. They have one of the top backcourts in the American this upcoming season, led by the return of 5th-year guard Kenyon Giles. Alston would be the star of the conference and get to put up huge numbers at Wichita, while likely keeping his draft stock fairly safe from falling.
